The Residency Program
Our residency here in Italy provides a tranquil beautiful hill town setting as well as a central location and convenient access to numerous centers such as Rome, Florence, Assisi and Perugia. Our residency program is all inclusive, providing for all your needs to allow you full concentration on your work.
Private accommodation in our twelfth century stone convent (called, Asilo, or “sanctuary”) with spectacular views of the Tiber Valley or doubles in our 18th c. palazzo as well as apartments in our historic buildings are available, including full board with three hearty home-cooked Umbrian meals per day. For visual artists, we provide spacious private studio spaces. Here, we offer unmatched cultural immersion in our friendly and traditional Umbrian village. While you are in Monte Castello however, we offer something truly unique.
Our program is designed to allow residents uninterrupted time to pursue their work in a peaceful environment. Within its walls, the village of Monte Castello provides a unique kind of solitude, creating a relaxed and contemplative atmosphere where one can work undisturbed. Clarity of thought is fostered in an environment where one is surrounded by hills and distant mountains and rewarded by panoramas at every overlook.
Echoes of the civilizations that have passed through this little village on a mountaintop stir the imagination. On the other hand, the diverse community of residents here offers ongoing opportunities for dialogue––for new perspectives on one’s work and oneself. Discussions with fellow residents over morning coffee in the piazza or over dinner on the terrace overlooking the Tiber Valley watching the moonrise helps to facilitate critical exchange and fosters creative growth. Our residency program dovetails with our Studio School, and as such includes private studio space, weekly field trips, and full board and accommodation. Residents pursue their own interests, working in their studio spaces in the village or in the landscape any time of day or night, and may audit one class concurrently offered by the Studio School, provided they commit to regular attendance.
Custom excursions are available. For residents who prefer to rent a car, we offer discounts with our partner. In Monte Castello parking is easy and safe and it is possible to go from the traditional lifestyle of our small village to a cultural event in Perugia, Assisi, or Orvieto in about 40 minutes. One can go exploring in the countryside or can be in central Rome or Florence (and park) in under 2 hours.
All program participants in the visual arts are provided with private studio space in the medieval buildings around the village. Typically, we are able to accommodate individual artists’ needs in terms of the size and location of studio spaces. Through our application form, we determine your needs, taking into consideration factors such as natural or artificial light, wall or table space, or if you prefer a space with a view or one of our cooler, more atmospheric interior spaces, which themselves often become the subjects of works of art. Writers and scholars will be housed in private apartments around the village with adequate space for living and work. If additional space is required, contact us for more information.
All our program participants will have a wonderful introduction to traditional Umbrian cuisine, with meals prepared in our on-site kitchen from the freshest ingredients. Except for field trip days, when we will only have time for a quick breakfast before we get on our way, program participants will enjoy three generous meals every day, all lovingly prepared by our cook. Daytime meals are served in our common space, where students, faculty and residents interact over stimulating mealtime discussions on our outdoor terrace overlooking the beautiful Tiber valley, the view from here is a spectacular panorama of mountains stretching eastward almost to the sea.
At the close of each session, residents have the option of participating in a group exhibition of work produced in the course of their visit. Exhibitions are held in the school gallery, which is centrally located in the village, near the theatre. These events are well attended by the community as well as by artists residing in the area, and present residents with an opportunity to exhibit in Europe with by an exceptionally well-informed audience. Sale of work is permitted and encouraged.
